Hardisty Dogu figures are produced using a terracotta clay, giving them a sense and colour of the earth.
After the initial firing the Dogu are placed in a metal container filled with saw dust and fired again. As they cool the last of the blackened ash falls away to reveal the surface
It is this smoking technique which gives the Dogu their unique and individual blackened texture.
Sea weed and other organic matter can also be added which has the effect of changing the colour of the smoked areas
